If you define yourselves as a ‘couple’ then I am happy to work with you. This flexibility extends to the service I offer. I see couples in the daytime or evenings for both short or longer term work depending on your particular needs and circumstances. I also offer other therapy services if couples counselling is not suitable. For example, I see individuals for counselling about relationship issues if their partner is unwilling to attend or if someone would prefer to come alone and I also practise as a Life Coach. I am a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society, have a PhD in emotional support at times of change and trauma and maintain a part-time academic post. I started my career working in the health service, began practising as a counsellor ten years ago and have counselled for a range of specialist and generic agencies. I have trained as a relationship counsellor with Relate and work for them a few hours every week. I also offer training that helps people to build confidence, become more assertive and to listen more effectively. I work with all areas of relationships but have particular interest in sexuality, disability/ chronic illness and emotional expression. My practice is based in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan (just outside Cardiff) and is easily accessible from the M4, (Newport, Valleys etc). I can also see clients in the centre of Cardiff if that is more convenient to you. At the beginning of 2010 I moved to mid Wales from Bristol and now maintain a small private practice in Aberystwyth. I offer an initial meeting where we can explore your concerns and decide what agreement might be most suitable. I work both short-term in a focused way (between 6-12 sessions with regular reviews and follow-up meetings) and longer-term for more in-depth issues. Sessions are usually one hour. My current fee is £40 for individuals and £45 for couples. Concessions can be negotiated if there is a need. I have a particular interest in bereavement and trauma work and helping people to attend to what is holding them back from moving forward or accepting what cannot be changed. In 1990 I was involved in setting up a counselling service in Bristol offering short-term counselling to employees through their work place. I remain a partner in the business with the intention of setting up a similar service in Aberystwyth. For some 13 years I was also working with the Rainbow Centre in Bristol, a charity offering support to children and their carers affected by cancer, life threatening illness and bereavement. I am accredited through The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and am a member of the Independent Practitioners Network. My orientation is broadly humanistic and integrative. I see couples or individuals at my home – usually during the day, but I can offer some evening appointments from 8pm. I can also arrange to see people in Birmingham if this would be more convenient.
